In order to reduce the demand for primary raw materials, previously unused materials must be used efficiently. Effective waste recycling offers not only economic advantages, but in particular ecological and social ones. The regional use of resources helps to keep supply chains short, reduce dependencies and close regional material cycles.
However, the necessary resource transition is much more than a technical challenge – it also requires cultural and social change. Which materials will shape our everyday lives in the future? Which (material) aesthetics will we have to get rid of? And which new haptic and visual impressions will we have to get used to?
The future raw project addresses yet unknown material futures. We collaborated with local businesses – Waste and residual materials from these production sites became the subject of our designerly investigation. Digital tools opened up new perspectives: 3D scans show raw residual artefacts, 360° images provide insight into the locations where these occur, and profiles and material flows reveal how residual materials are embedded in material flows. The material mixer, a structure and colour tool, offers a glimpse into future configurations of residual materials. The Material Inspector is a collection of multifaceted material stories that interweave documentary and narrative elements. They reveal the invisible processes, paths and potential of residual materials.
